Description
A manuscript letter, numbered 78 and addressed "To the Editor of the Times," thanking the nephew of Lord Nelson for his truthful delineation of his Lordship's character as given in the previous day's paper. The writer relates that Nelson spent much of the little time he had on shore at Gibraltar in the house of his wife's grandfather, with whom the admiral had fought most of his great battles side by side and was on the most intimate terms; on board ship Nelson was almost adored, having a kind word for everyone — even the ship's monkeys did not escape his pleasant smile — yet his word was all-powerful, and ashore he would play by the hour with the children, willingly standing as godfather and fondly nursing the child in the most affectionate manner. The author concludes that Nelson exemplified the true English Gentleman, and signs from the Wellington Life Office, London. Folded for posting, with light foxing and fold-wear.
