Description
An letter from Chevening, Sevenoaks, dated 6 November 1861, signed "Stanhope" and addressed to George Matcham, son of Catherine Nelson and nephew of the admiral. Stanhope — the historian and biographer of William Pitt — writes that he has been greatly interested by the "very excellent letter" Matcham has inserted in that morning's Times as a vindication of his uncle from a thoughtless attack, and notes that one paragraph in particular, concerning Lord Nelson's last interview with Mr. Pitt, he should wish to incorporate in his forthcoming concluding volume of the Life of the Right Honourable William Pitt. He asks, for his own satisfaction, to be told privately the identity of the writer. Folded for posting, with traces of a red wax seal.
