Description
A manuscript copy, headed "Copy of letter from Lord Stanhope to Mr Matcham No 2" and numbered 77, reproducing Stanhope's second letter from Chevening dated 15 November 1861. Stanhope thanks Matcham for the particulars supplied in his reply, undertakes to quote in his forthcoming volume the tale of the parting between Pitt and Nelson as first made known by Matcham in his communication to The Times, and encloses for Matcham's perusal a letter found among Mr. Pitt's papers which records in a very gratifying manner the impression that final meeting had left on Lord Nelson's mind — explaining that when Nelson said on that occasion he had "done nothing," he meant that he had failed to overtake Admiral Villeneuve in his pursuit to and from the West Indies.
