Description
A near-contemporary manuscript copy, on mourning-bordered notepaper, of Lord Stanhope's first letter to George Matcham of 6 November 1861, headed "Copy of Lord Stanhope's letter to Mr Matcham No 1" and numbered 76. The text reproduces in full Stanhope's praise of Matcham's letter to The Times defending the character of his uncle Lord Nelson, his interest in the anecdote of Nelson's last meeting with Pitt, and his request to be privately told the writer's name. Likely retained by the Matcham family as a record of the correspondence.
