Description
A group of four printed items produced on board HMS Resolute during the British Arctic search expedition for Sir John Franklin (1850–1852). The collection comprises three entertainment advertisements—one titled “Grand Bal Masqué!” and two titled “Grand Fancy Dress Ball!!”—alongside a song sheet, “The English Maiden’s Song.”
These items were printed in the Arctic regions using a shipboard press and relate to organised theatrical and social activities, often associated with the “Royal Arctic Theatre” and “Royal Arctic Casino,” which were established to maintain morale among officers and crew during wintering in the polar ice.
The material reflects the cultural life, humour, and social structure of Royal Navy personnel under extreme conditions, and forms part of the wider corpus of expeditionary print culture generated during the mid-19th-century searches for Franklin.
