Description
A partial silk-printed message intended for transmission by balloon during the 1850 Arctic search for Sir John Franklin. The surviving fragment, printed on black silk, bears the heading “Printed for balloon message to Sir John Franklin in 1850” and includes the incomplete text: “Dispatched by a Balloon from H.M.S. [—] in Lat. N., Long W., steering W.N.W., Provisions left at [—],” with the remainder lost.
Such balloon messages were prepared by Royal Navy search vessels, including HMS Resolute, as part of experimental communication methods designed to extend the range of contact across the Arctic ice. These messages typically recorded a ship’s position, course, and the location of deposited provisions or records, intended to aid Franklin or other parties if encountered.
The fragment represents a rare survival of expeditionary communication material printed under extreme conditions, illustrating both the logistical challenges and ingenuity of mid-19th-century Arctic exploration.
