Description
Short third-person note on Dublin Castle stationery, dated May 1870, in which Sir Bernard Burke, Ulster King of Arms, asks "Mr. Purvis" to complete and return at once the enclosed form for the forthcoming edition of Burke's Landed Gentry. The questionnaire itself is not present. On the verso, the recipient has drafted three successive attempts at describing a family connection through the Matcham, Eyre and Nelson families: a youngest daughter of George Matcham (son of George Matcham of Ashfold, Sussex, by Catherine, youngest sister of Admiral Lord Nelson), by his wife Harriet, daughter and heiress of William Purves-Eyre of Newhouse, Wiltshire. Companion piece to the Hardwicke's County Families questionnaire of the same year.
