Description
A pamphlet by George Nelson Matcham of Newhouse (1789–1877), nephew of Admiral Lord Nelson, written in answer to an article in the Quarterly Review, no. CCXXI (issue 221), which Matcham held to have misrepresented his uncle's character and conduct. Issued in London in 1861 as a companion to his Notes on the Character of Admiral Lord Nelson of the same year, and afterwards cited in Earl Stanhope's Life of Pitt (vol. iv, p. 329, 1862 edition). Matcham, who as a sixteen-year-old had been at Portsmouth on 14 September 1805 to bid farewell to Nelson before Trafalgar, and who walked in the funeral procession at St Paul's in January 1806, wrote from direct family memory and from the papers preserved at Newhouse. The Matcham family connects to this branch of Purvises through his daughter Louisa Harriet Eyre Matcham, who married Fortescue Richard Purvis — son of Richard Fortescue Purvis.
