Description
A memoir of George Matcham (1753–1833) — East India Company servant, overland traveller, inventor, and brother-in-law of Admiral Lord Nelson through his marriage to Catherine Nelson in 1787 — written by his eldest son George Nelson Matcham of Newhouse shortly after his father's death at Ashfold Lodge, Slaugham, Sussex, on 3 February 1833. The text was first published in The Gentleman's Magazine for March 1833 (vol. i, p. 276). This separate offprint was issued by Pewtress & Co. of Lincoln's Inn Fields in 1877, almost certainly as a companion memorial to the obituary of George Nelson Matcham himself, who had died the same January — bringing father and son into a single commemorative pairing. The Matcham family connects to this branch of the Purvises through George Nelson Matcham's daughter Louisa Harriet Eyre Matcham, who married Fortescue Richard Purvis — son of Richard Fortescue Purvis.
