Description
A bifolium of densely written genealogical notes in blue ink, evidently part of a larger family-history compilation concerning the Purves family. The left-hand page traces a line of clergymen and country gentlemen, recording an ordination; it continues with the succession of the Rev. Fortescue Richard Purves (b. 1828), his marriage in 1860 to Louisa Harriet, daughter of George Matcham of Newhouse, Salisbury, and notes on George Purves of Blackbrook (b. 1781) and his descendants, including a marriage connection to the Maitland family. The right-hand page, headed "Notice of Medal & Clasp given to R. F. P. for Indian Wars," sets out the descent of the owners of Darsham beginning with George Purves, son of James Purves and grandson of Sir William Purves, 1st Baronet, Scotland. Richard Fortescue, who entered the service of the East India Company, attained the rank of Brevet Captain, and later served as an interpreter in Hindustan before retiring to England in ill health in 1820. The paper shows fold lines and minor staining, and the hand is hurried and informal, suggesting working notes rather than a finished copy.
