Description
A compilation of twelve contemporary newspaper transcriptions documenting the naval career, retirement, and death of Admiral John Child Purvis (1747–1825) over a span of nearly thirty years. The articles trace his appointment to command of HMS London in the aftermath of the Spithead Mutiny (Ipswich Journal, 1797); his service as a member of the court-martial of Lord Henry Paulet off Cadiz (Chester Courant, 1798); his successive elevations through the flag ranks, from Rear-Admiral of the Blue (London Chronicle, 1804) to Rear-Admiral of the White (Oracle, 1805), Vice-Admiral of the Blue (Pilot, 1809), and finally Admiral of the Blue (Morning Advertiser, 1819); his command of the Gibraltar squadron under Lord Collingwood, recorded in the despatch reporting the loss of the gun-boat Hannah off Tarifa (Maidstone Journal, 1806); and his retirement to Vicar's Hill House near Lymington, reflected in his membership of the Fordingbridge district committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (Hampshire Chronicle, 1814), his subscription to the Waterloo Fund (Pilot, 1815), and his presentation of his son the Rev. Richard Fortescue Purvis to the Vicarage of Whitsbury (Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 1824). The collection closes with two obituary notices recording his death on 23 February 1825 (Hampshire Advertiser and Durham County Advertiser, 1825). Source publications: Ipswich Journal, Chester Courant, London Chronicle, Oracle and the Daily Advertiser, Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, Pilot (London), Hampshire Chronicle, Morning Advertiser, Salisbury and Winchester Journal, Hampshire Advertiser, and Durham County Advertiser.
Note on transcriptions: These transcriptions are taken from nineteenth-century printed newspapers, many of them degraded or imperfectly inked, and minor errors may remain despite careful checking; original spellings, contemporary misprints, and variant renderings of names and ships have generally been preserved as printed.
