Description
A compilation of seven contemporary newspaper transcriptions documenting the coastguard career of George William Hicks across three stations between 1902 and 1914. The articles record his appearances as a witness at inquests following the recovery of a victim of the Caister lifeboat disaster (Kessingland, 1902), the drowning of a young postman from Nutfield (Herne Bay, 1905), his role organising a relief fund for a colleague's widow (Calshot Castle, 1908), and his listing among Yarmouth coastguards mobilised at the outbreak of the First World War (1914). Source publications: Norwich Argus, Downham Market Gazette, Lowestoft Journal, Herne Bay Press, Surrey Mirror, Western Gazette, and Isle of Wight County Press.
Note on transcriptions: These transcriptions are taken from nineteenth-century printed newspapers, many of them degraded or imperfectly inked, and minor errors may remain despite careful checking; original spellings, contemporary misprints, and variant renderings of names and ships have generally been preserved as printed.
