Description
Handwritten notebook containing transcriptions of eight letters relating to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson (1758–1805). The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1861–1862 and centres on George Nelson Matcham (Nelson's nephew, son of Catherine Matcham née Nelson), apparently gathered in connection with his account of his uncle. A single earlier letter of 1806, written within months of Nelson's death at Trafalgar, is also included.
Contents: Earl Stanhope to [George Nelson Matcham], 15 November 1861; John Cranford to Mr Pitt, Piccadilly, 10 November 1806; Earl Stanhope to [George Nelson Matcham], Grosvenor Place, 10 May 1862; Lord Shelbourne to [George Nelson] Matcham, 10 May 1862; Field Marshal Lord Seaton to [George Nelson] Matcham, Beechwood, 2 December 1861; Earl of Normanton to [George] Nelson Matcham, n.d.
Charlotte, Lady Bridport (niece of Admiral Lord Nelson) to her cousin, n.d; [Earl Stanhope?] to the Editor of The Times, n.d., concerning George Nelson Matcham's account of Lord Nelson. The letters appear to be contemporary or near-contemporary transcripts rather than originals.
