Description
An obituary of George Nelson Matcham (1789–1877) of Newhouse, Wiltshire — nephew of Admiral Lord Nelson, magistrate, antiquary, and chairman of the Wiltshire Quarter Sessions — issued as an offprint from The Law Magazine and Review for May 1877, following his death at Newhouse on 18 January 1877. Printed in London by Pewtress & Co. of Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields. Matcham, a graduate of St John's College, Cambridge (LL.B. 1814, LL.D. 1820), was admitted advocate in Doctors' Commons in 1820 and contributed accounts of the Wiltshire hundreds of Downton and Frustfield to Sir Richard Colt Hoare's Modern History of Wiltshire. He inherited the Newhouse estate through his marriage to Harriet Eyre in 1817. The Matcham family connects to this branch of the Purvises through his daughter Louisa Harriet Eyre Matcham, who married Fortescue Richard Purvis — son of Richard Fortescue Purvis.
